If you don’t do anything else in Mentone, make DeSoto State Park your must-see spot. The state park, nestled atop Lookout Mountain, spans over 3,000 acres of forest, rivers, waterfalls, and mountainous terrain. Available activities include kayaking, fishing, hiking, biking, cycling, rappelling, bouldering, and in general any other outdoor activity! Nearby area attractions include the ever popular DeSoto Falls, a 104-foot cascading waterfall, the DeSoto Falls trail, Indian Falls, and the Little River Canyon Nature Preserve.

One of the best times to visit Mentone and the DeSoto State Park is in October for Colorfest.

Places to eat

There are a handful of eateries in town, each with their own unique flavor and character. Moonlight Bistro is one that is known in the area for their fresh fried green tomatoes served with homemade remoulade sauce. For gourmet cuisine in an understated setting head out to the Wildflower Cafe, which serves lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch. Their hippie-chic atmosphere provides a casual setting to enjoy the refined cuisine and even live music. Other delectable places to eat are the Plowshares Bistro, The Green Leaf Grill, and of course the Mentone Market.

Places to shop

Log Cabin Village is a quaint little collection of shops that sit high on the hill in the center of town. Local artisans and crafters sell everything from wood carvings, essential oils, and handmade soaps. The shops and artists are truly what make Mentone a charming place to visit.

Cloudmont Ski Resort

As the southernmost ski resort in the U.S., Cloudmont Ski Resort offers visitors a chance to ski in the South! With two 1000-foot beginner to intermediate slopes, snow is patiently made using the technologies of today, once temperatures get cool enough. Lessons are provided for those just beginning. In the warmer months, the resort offers golfing and horseback riding for visitors.

Cultural sites

Take in a bit of history and visit one of the many cultural sites in town. St. Joseph’s on the Mountain is a wooden church with varied stained-glass windows surrounds the oldest known structure in Mentone. Tourists are welcome during worship services and for visits to tour the inside.
