There is always plenty to see and do when visiting the mountains of NE Alabama. Scenic attractions like DeSoto Falls, the Little River Canyon National Preserve, High Falls Park and the charming communities of Mentone and Fort Payne have visitors returning time and again. Seasonal changes warrant repeat returns as well. The mountainous terrain is beginning take on the change from winter to spring as daffodils and yellow bell brighten the scenic roadways with welcoming rays of sunshine against the backdrop of clear blue skies. When you travel to our mountain hamlet of Mentone this weekend, plan to include one or more of these following events in your activities of things to enjoy. Don't forget to stop in our unique shops that include the Crow's Nest at the Hitching Post, Kamama's and the Mentone Hardware with the Hardware Cafe, just to name a few! February 26 Rappelling Adventure - Come experience the thrill of rappelling down the sheer sandstone gems of NE Alabama.  No previous experience necessary.  Each trip includes all the gear plus basic instruction.  10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 256-997-9577  

February 26 Rock Climbing Adventure - Nestled in the NE corner of Alabama are some of the best and unique sandstone cliffs in the country.  Come experience first-hand what rock climbing is all about with guides who are fun, safe and energetic. February 27 Cold Weather Survival Class - Learn how to survive in cold harsh conditions.  Learn tips to prevent hypothermia and death.  This class covers the basics for emergency cold weather conditions and also covers a few tips on how to stay warm and comfortable for everyday cold conditions.  2 p.m. to 5 p.m. 256-997-9577

February 27 Southern Exposure Film Series - One World Adventure Company is very excited to announce the opportunity to view a showing of the Southern Environmental Law Center's Southern Exposure Film Series. The film project is a fellowship program created to raise awareness about Alabama's rich natural resources -- and timely information about the most important environmental issues facing them today. Bring your family for this informative event! There will be light refreshments served. We will also be making an announcement about an exciting project that will be happening in downtown Fort Payne! February 28 Advanced Rappelling Class - Learn special rigging, mechanical advantage, ascending and rope walking, alternate rappel devices, changeovers, knots, safety procedures, special gear, and backup belaying.  Meet at T.A.S. Training Center 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. $125 per person. 256-997-9577

February 28 Wild Cave Tour - Go beyond where the average tourist explores!  This 2.5 hour adventure is for those of you ready to explore on your knees, on your belly, in the mud and through tight tunnels.  Explore in one of NE Alabama's most unique all-weather caves, Manitou Cave, in the heart of Fort Payne.  Adventure includes helmet, cave lamps plus a fun informative guide.  Meet at True Adventure Sports.  5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. 256-997-9577

February 28 - March 1 Rainsville Lions Club 29th Annual Rodeo - The Rainsville Lions Club will be hosting its annual rodeo at the NEAL Agri Business Center. The rodeo will consist of bareback riding, team roping, barrell racing and bull riding. Admission for adults is $12, children $7 & children 5 & under free. 256-638-1650

March 1 Mentone Farmer's Market on the grounds of the Mentone Inn - This weekly event showcases the fine arts and baked goods of local Mentonians. Always something good and exciting to be found at the Mentone Farmer's Market! 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

March 1 Story Time at the Little River Canyon Center - The Lorax by Dr. Seuss is the feature story of this First Saturday of the month book reading. Staff of the LRCC bring this book to life as they read to children of all ages. Event begins at 11:00 a.m.

March 1 - 2 Spring Survival Class with One World Adventure - An early spring survival class for Wilderness Survival 101. A weekend long class with a specific for the lower Appalachian mountain range and spring weather conditions. We will cover a broad range of topics from Clothing, Kits, Shelter, Fire, Water, and Rescue. Saturday at 9 a.m. to Sunday at 3 p.m. 256-634–8370

Join the one-and-only, “Dr. Frog” George Cline, for an unforgettable evening of romance and songs from the first amphibian voices of the season. March 1 DeKalb County Bridal Showcase - This event is organized by the Women's Care Center and sponsored by Zoom In Photography, Snap Fitness, Regions Bank, and Dixie Salvage, Inc.  This will be an opportunity for brides, grooms, and family members to talk with exhibitors for all wedding needs in one location.  There will be wedding and event planners, caterers, photographers, florists, beauty consultants, home furnishing advisors, and more.  Twenty minute marriage seminars will be offered during the event.  There will also be drawings for door prizes.  The event will be at the First United Methodist Church Christian Life Center in Fort Payne from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Admission will be $5 For more information: 256-845-0838

March 2 FREE Pancake Breakfast at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Fort Payne - This monthly event is sponsored by the OLV Knights of Columbus and is open to everyone! The breakfast is free but donations are greatly appreciated and benefit the community charitable activities of the Knights of Columbus. Menu for this Sunday is Grandma's homemade pancakes, sausage, coffee, milk and juice. Breakfast is served from 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
